Drywall is the rare material where the waste factor IS the project plan: board is cheap, returnable, and heavy — and the failure mode of underestimating is an afternoon at the lumber yard, not a budget crisis. The honest question is not "how much waste" but "what kind of room is this."
Where waste actually comes from
- Openings that do not align: a window falling mid-sheet turns the offcut into scrap unless another opening needs exactly that shape.
- Breakage: board flexes on the way in; corners of stored sheets ding. One broken sheet per 40 is typical handling loss.
- The "almost fits" sheet: a wall 4 inches taller than board length wastes the horizontal cut — unless another wall needs it.
- Layout freedom: the stagger rule means sometimes the convenient sheet is the wrong one; waste buys you the right layout.
The honest table

The margin economics
At $15 a sheet, the difference between 8% and 12% waste on a 25-sheet job is $15 — one pizza. The return trip is 90 minutes plus fuel. The margin is almost always the cheaper purchase, and most suppliers take unopened sheets back. The only sin is the second trip with an empty truck.
Two exceptions
- 12-foot board on long walls: fewer joints AND less waste — the premium board sometimes lowers the count. Run the calculator with both lengths before ordering.
- Specialty board: moisture-rated and type-X come in smaller bundles and often cannot be returned once wet-weather stored — buy specialty tighter (5–8%) and standard looser.
Order with the margin, stack the board flat, and return what the layout did not need. The waste factor is not pessimism — it is the price of finishing in one trip.
