How the cost calculator works

What the money buys

Material runs $1.60–2.20 per square foot on a level-4 DIY job: sheets dominate (70–80%), mud and tape split the rest. The pro-installed comparison lands at 2–3× materials — and the delta buys days of drying-time management, dust control, and finish quality that raking light will judge forever.

Where DIY wins and loses

  • Wins: hanging (the physical skill is real but learnable), garage and utility finishes, small rooms where pro minimums price high.
  • Loses: large open rooms where joint count is high, level-5 finishes, and ceilings — overhead finishing is the discipline that separates pros, and your neck learns it too.
  • The hybrid: DIY hang, pro tape-and-finish — a common split that buys the hard part (the finish) and keeps the cheap part (the labor of lifting).

Ordering notes

  1. Flat-stored board only — warped sheets fight the framing and the finish shows it.
  2. Delivery beats hauling past ~15 sheets; the truck fee is less than one dropped bundle.
  3. Buy the margin, return the rest — most yards take unopened sheets back; the 10% margin is insurance, not inventory.
