How the sheet calculator works
Area, sheets, margin
Wall area = length × height, minus openings (but deductions rarely save whole sheets — a door consumes parts of two sheets around it). Sheets = net area ÷ sheet area (4 ft × board length), rounded up with the waste margin. Openings: deduct only large ones — picture windows and double doors; standard doors save scraps, not sheets.
Choosing board length
- 4×8: easy handling, more joints — fine for small rooms and solo work.
- 4×12: wall-length sheets mean three joints become one on an 8-foot ceiling... actually one horizontal joint per 12 feet of wall — fewer seams to finish, but two carriers and a truck.
- Walls taller than board length need a horizontal joint — plan it at 48–60 inches (below eye level, above the chair rail line) where finish flaws hide.
The layout rules that matter
- Ceilings first — they rest on the walls' top edges; walls support them.
- Stagger vertical joints between sheets — a continuous crack line is a finish failure built in.
- Screw pattern: 12 inches on center in the field, 8 at edges (see the mud calculator for the screw count).
